A town centre car park has reopened following a £6m refurbishment.
The revamped Talbot Road multi-storey car park is the first phase of Blackpool’s £220m new Central Business District to be completed.
Work began in November last year to transform the structure, which dates back to 1939, and had fallen into a state of disrepair.
It has been re-clad to create a glass and stainless steel facade boasting 650 parking spaces, with the interior entirely upgraded.
The ground floor, which was formerly used as the town’s bus station, has also been overhauled to create retail units, with the largest unit set to open as Mr Basrai’s World Buffet and Bar and other tenants due to be named in the coming months.
Coun Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for urban regeneration, said: “This is the first step of the Talbot Gateway Central Business District development to be completed.
“While there are further challenges ahead with the opening of the office building and the Sainsbury’s store, which are both progressing well, I’m delighted we’ve completed the first hurdle successfully.”
Parking charges will start at £1.50 an hour, with motorists paying on foot when they return to their vehicles, while opening hours are from 7am until midnight.
Coun John Jones, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: “The Talbot Road multi-storey car park has been transformed into a modern and secure facility.
“It will provide key spaces for visitors to the Talbot Gateway Central Business District and the surrounding area and is a major upgrade.”
The council offices and Sainsbury’s store are due to open next spring, with the next phase expected to see plans submitted for a hotel on Deansgate.
While some trimming and snagging work will still be being completed next week, that will not prevent the car park from being fully operational for this week’s half-term break.
Originally the car park had been due to be demolished as part of the redevelopment of the Talbot Gateway area but regeneration chiefs opted for a full refurbishment instead.
