From huge herds of elephants to getting up close with the king of the jungle, a North Shore photographer has got his dream career in focus after starting his own business.
Glenn Upton Fletcher has just returned from Africa on assignment as a wildlife photographer.
The 41-year-old married dad-of-two used to work in IT insurance but gave it up to follow his childhood dream.
Glenn lived in South Africa as a child where his love of taking photographs began.
Now with a little bit of help from Blackpool Council’s Get Started in business scheme, he has launched Gufphotography Ltd.
Now, he leads specialist wildlife safaris to Africa as photography masterclasses, as well as delivering lectures on wildlife across the UK.
Glenn said: “I’ve been taking photographs since I was a child as a hobby.
“I grew up in Africa and took a camera around with me all the time.
“I have lived in Blackpool for five years and have been taking photos before I started my business.
“A lot of my work is self directed work where I come up with the project and develop it, take the photographs and do the marketing.”
He said a love of nature and wildlife and of travelling off the beaten track inspires him.
As well using his pictures to lobby governments around the world about wildlife issues, Glenn’s company will also help to make people and communities connect with wildlife.
“I have just come back from a safari. We took clients to South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe to some of the national parks,” he said.
Glenn got help from Get Started service, which is part of the Start Up Lancashire project, supported by European Regional Development Fund.
Coun Fred Jackson, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Urban Development at the council, said: “The Get Started scheme offers some great expert advice to anybody thinking of setting up on their own.
“As well as special workshops and seminars, we are also able to help people create business plans and secure them funding to begin building their companies.”
“At a time when the economy is tight for many, it’s really important that we can help people to become their own bosses, and we’re already getting some great success stories from businesses which are thriving thanks to our help.
“Businesses can come from all sorts of ideas, no matter how big or small. Glenn has followed his dream to become a wildlife photographer and I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to help him.”
So far, the service has helped over 40 local businesses to set up on their own and access a total of around £300,000.
