Enterprise hunt: Gordon Marsden and Mark Yates

Blackpool’s talented young entrepreneurs are being challenged to bring their big business ideas to life, in the search for the country’s best student and graduate entrepreneurial talent.

The competition is being launched by Lloyds Bank as part of their 2014 Enterprise Awards, which recognises the next generation of businesses and entrepreneurs, and Blackpool South MP Gordon Marsden sees no reason why the winner shouldn’t come from Blackpool.

He said: “We have so much young talent in Blackpool, so I would really encourage students and graduates from across the town to get involved in the competition.

“Our schools across Blackpool are doing some great things around enterprise and business. From the Just Listening and Back Blackpool Businesses events I have held this year, I have seen the passion and enthusiasm in abundance from our young people to get started in business – it’s really encouraging to see.

“The work also being done by Blackpool Council and schemes like FYCreatives mean that the town is a great place to get a small business or business idea going. Without the support it can often be difficult for our budding young entrepreneurs to get started, however this competition can provide a platform for many to have their ideas heard and is also a chance to network with those already succeeding in business.”

Local small business owner Mark Yates, who was born and bred in Blackpool, is also backing the competition.

He said: “Small independent businesses are the backbone of the north west and the economic climate over the last few years has made it difficult for innovative new ideas to evolve. That’s is why it is vital that the next generation of entrepreneurs take opportunities like this to bring their ideas to fruition.

“The dedication and support Gordon Marsden has given in Blackpool to small businesses and the communities in which they are based, is something for which we are extremely grateful.”

The grand final will take place on Wednesday, October 15 with £10,000 being awarded to the Overall Best Start-Up and £50,000 to the Overall Best Enterprise.

Entrants can apply for the competition by Wednesday July 23 at www.lloydsbank.com/enterpriseawards.
