A COUNCIL site branded an “eyesore” looks set to be transformed after a planning application was finally submitted for a housing scheme.
Residents and councillors have spent months waiting for Fylde Council to sell its depot site, on St David’s Road North, St Annes, and now New Fylde Housing has lodged plans to build affordable homes on the land.
The 32-home development would replace the dilapidated depot buildings, and local Coun Howard Henshaw has welcomed the plans with open arms.
He said: “I’m very pleased because I’ve wanted it developing for a long time.
“The development will blend in with neighbouring St David’s Grove and I think the residents will like it.
“I’m just surprised it’s taken so long because it’s a real eyesore.”
The 32 homes would be a mix of two, three and four-bedroom semi-detached and terraced houses, two bungalows for the elderly or disabled and one and two-bedroom apartments, with the main access to the site – which is also bordered by the railway line – off St David’s Road North.
Eric Tamanis, New Fylde Housing’s managing director, said: “The development would have a very positive impact on the local community, regenerate an existing brownfield site and provide much-needed affordable housing for local people.”
And now Coun Henshaw hopes New Fylde Housing’s plans will prompt action at the former council site on the corner of St David’s Road North and Heeley Road, which was the subject of a failed bid to build a homeless hostel in 2010.
Coun Henshaw added: “Eventually I want affordable homes on the other side of St David’s Grove too with the former depot developed to create one long stretch of affordable housing.
“It will really improve the whole ward because at the moment they are two very unpleasant sites.”
