From building sites to building up fitness is the career route for a Blackpool dad who is set to sacrifice his £40,000 a year wage to follow his dreams.

Jamie Ashworth, 32, of St Mary Close, Grange Park, has worked on projects including the Talbot Gateway and the Whitegate Drive Health Centre, both in Blackpool, during his nine years as a construction manager.

But he is giving up his secure job with Eric Wright Construction to launch a new career as a personal trainer.

He said: “It is a big gamble to give up a secure job and income but my passion is fitness and training.

“When I am at work, all I can think about is finishing so I can get in the gym.

“I have been thinking about doing this for about 18 months, and have been saving towards it.

“It is quite different to what I have been doing up until now, but I think there are skills I can transfer.

“Whether you are managing someone who is trying to get fit, or someone who is building a wall, the main thing is you have to motivate them.

“You have to tap into why people are doing things to encourage them to achieve their final goal.

“So I will be transferring some of what I have learnt from the construction industry, and I am confident I will be successful in my new chosen path.

“I also have the support of my family and friends.”

Jamie is due to start a six-week course in Manchester with Premier Training, towards diplomas in personal training and fitness instruction.

His first project is to offer free training sessions to people looking to lose weight and improve their general health and fitness levels.

He said: “I am hoping to work with between four and six people with significant weight issues to help them change their lifestyle and inspire them to stick to something that will help them have a healthier future.

“I also hope to complete a course so that I can work with people who have been referred by their GPs to take up exercise for health reasons.”

Jamie, who has an eight-year-old daughter, currently trains at Helio’s Gym on Newton Drive, Blackpool, and is looking for somewhere to base himself.

He added: “I am hoping to lease space from a gym in the town to use for my personal training.”
