A KEY road bridge between two Wyre villages is to be closed for more than FIVE months, it has emerged.

The electrification of the railway line between Preston and Blackpool means Tithebarn Street Bridge, between Poulton and Carleton is to be closed to traffic.

As the closure dates have been revealed – January 7 to May 22, 2013 – businesses are bracing themselves for a downturn in passing custom.

And councillors have raised concerns over access to amenities for elderly people living in the area.

David Bannister, councillor for Tithebarn ward, said: “It’s such a long time and I’m concerned elderly residents will lose that habit of going shopping in Poulton. We will ensure there is a suitable footbridge though.”

Some businesses along Tithebarn Street, Poulton, and Poulton Road, Carleton, said they had received no notification from Network Rail of the dates of the closure.

The owner of The Leaping Fish, on Poulton Road, who wished not to be named, said: “It is going to have an effect on businesses, people who usually come in cars won’t be able to come past.

“I haven’t heard anything from anyone about it. It doesn’t seem to matter what us little people think.”

A pedestrian bridge will be constructed while Network Rail carry out electrification work.
