Fears over land used as car park

Plans for developing a patch of council-owned land currently used as a car park have stalled.

A meeting of Blackpool Council heard there were fears over the land on Tower Street, alongside the Houndshill Centre, remaining as it is.

Coun Fred Jackson, cabinet member for regeneration, was quizzed about the lack of progress on the prominent site.

Coun Christian Cox said: “In 2011 temporary planning permission was given for land on Tower Street to be used as a car park for three years.

“On July 18 it will cease to be a car park and I have concerns if that permission is extended.

“We have car parks everywhere and I would like to see development on this site.”

A row of shops, which opened on to Coronation Street, was demolished a few years ago in the hope the land would be earmarked for a future extension of the Houndshill Centre.

But the economic slowdown has since stalled any potential development in the area.
