The controversy surrounding so-called payday lenders has prompted Blackpool Council to block their websites on all of its computers.
As of today, users of any council-owned computer – including ones in libraries – can no longer access the sites.
The authority said it has taken the decision as a result of growing concerns over residents being tempted into taking out short-term loans at high interest rates they cannot afford.
Coun Simon Blackburn, leader of Blackpool Council, said: “These companies take advantage of people when they are at their very lowest and desperate for money.
“All across the town there are people living in poverty looking for a solution to their problems and unfortunately too many think it is the only option they have.
“Short-term high interest loans can be the start of unmanageable debt that spirals out of control.”
