Environmentalists are hoping to see a tide of businesses sign up to their scheme to look after the Fylde coast’s beaches.

Environmentalists are hoping to see a tide of businesses sign up to their scheme to look after the Fylde coast’s beaches.

Already organisations and businesses have pledged to take action for cleaner seas.

Though beaches in the North West have the cleanest water for decades, stricter EU standards set to come in in 2015 mean conservationists are pushing for everyone to help keep beaches clean.

Now the LOVEmyBEACH campaign has launched a business pack with a checklist of actions that minimise the pollution that ends up in the sea, to be downloaded.

The Sea Life centre on Blackpool Promenade has become one of the first businesses to sign up.

Showcasing more than 50 displays and more than 2,000 spectacular aquatic creatures, including tropical sharks, colourful reef fish, turtles, rays and sea horses, Sea Life Blackpool knows better than most the importance of clean seawater.

They have been supporting the LOVEmyBEACH campaign through a whole range of activities, including running their own beach clean on the beach opposite the centre. They even offer free entry to anyone who takes part in a beach clean!

Jenn Newton, general manager, said: “We’re passionate about sharing the secrets of the sea and that includes how to look after the environments for generations to come.

“What we do now can affect the quality of the seawater. In Blackpool we’ve struggled to meet the EU standards in the past but we want to be part of the campaign to help pass the new standards in 2015.

“Many of the actions are straightforward; check your drains are connected right, get a fat trap in your kitchens, put a bin next to toilets.

“It’s wonderful to come to work every day and see the sea and beach! The actions are simple but make a huge difference to the bathing waters and that’s why we’re proud to LOVEmyBEACH.”

Businesses can simply download a pack from the www.lovemybeach.org/business-pack, complete at least five actions and submit the checklist.

A special drop in question and answer session will take place today between 10am and 3pm at Madame Tussauds for any businesses wanting to find out more.
