Journey into the history of trams
BISPHAM multimedia design agency Zeronorth is in the final stages of putting together a book capturing the fading history of Blackpool's unique tram system.
The project has brought together the Red Bank Road team's creative design and printing skills to produce a book so people can remember the golden age of Blackpool's trams.
Boss Shaun Dennison, who also owns Preston-based printers Colourswatch Limited, said: "We're delighted to be involved in the production of this book.
"The trams are an integral part of Blackpool's history and all the staff at Zeronorth and Colourswatch are excited about this unique project in keeping the culture and heritage of Blackpool alive."
The book, A Tribute to Rigby Road Works 1922 to 2006, is written by local author and tram enthusiast John Woodman.
The content is drawn from the Rigby Road Works and The Gazette archives, personal records, contributions by the residents and tram and transport museums throughout the UK.
John hopes the book will raise public awareness of Blackpool's trams because with the changing transport systems, new technology and government regeneration plans they could soon become a thing of the past.
He said: "I wrote the book to showcase Blackpool's unique transport system.
"The network has existed since the 1920s and was a massive municipal undertaking.
"Trams are part of Blackpool's cultural history and the redevelopment and regeneration plans could soon mean that trams become obsolete.
"I hope my book will raise awareness of this unique system and help preserve Blackpool's transport for future generations to enjoy."
John has captured the feeling of working on this unique system by telling heart-warming stories of tram workers from the First World War to the present day. The book also features a special profile of Blackpool's first-ever conductress during that war, which John hopes will bring back memories and contribute new material towards his next book.
John said: "The picture and story is a kind of SOS, 'Do you know her?' I hope there will be a response and people will contact me with their memories."
John has always had a passion for Blackpool and its trams stemming back to his childhood and despite working all over the world he has kept it alive ever since.
He has three grown up children and lives with his wife in Lytham St Annes.
Zeronorth is currently putting the final touches to the project by selecting and printing the tram pictures which will illustrate the book.
