Jobs set to soar at chopper firm

BLACKPOOL could be in line for an apprentice jobs boost after Bond Aviation Group set up a £5m training scheme.

The firm, which flies daily to Irish Sea rigs from the resort's airport, has appointed 10 new trainees from its scheme which it hopes to expand across the UK.

It's new state-of-the-art training centre at Gloucestershire Airport is being used to train pilots who will be used at its bases across the country, including Blackpool.

Peter Bond, executive chairman of the company, said: "The nature of our business requires highly skilled and motivated individuals, so as a company committed to excellence, we took the decision to invest in our training programmes and facilities.

"We have now trained some of the best pilots and engineers in the business today and we will continue to invest, to nurture the talent for tomorrow.

"We warmly welcome the graduates to the company and hope they enjoy a long and rewarding career with Bond."

Last year, Bond brought in a fleet of new helicopters for its Blackpool base and it is hoped some of the new graduates will be able to fly them after completing the scheme.

Richard Lawford, one of the pilot scheme graduates and now a co-pilot for Bond, said: "We all feel very fortunate to have been selected by Bond for their pilot training scheme, which has enabled us to commence training in the knowledge that we have a job with a leading company at the end of it.

"We are now very much looking forward top progressing our careers with Bond, making use of all the training we have received and continuing the learning process while flying as a co-pilot."

Gloucestershire-based Bond Aviation Group is privately owned by Stephen and Peter Bond and has a turnover of more than 100m.

It has two main operations - Bond Offshore Helicopters and Bond Air Services, which between them transport personnel and equipment for the offshore gas, oil and renewable energy industries, provide air support for the emergency services, including the air ambulance and the police.

They also help out on search and rescue missions across the UK coastline.
