It's war – budget chain tells rivals

BLACKPOOL'S Travelodge hotels are among the best performing in the country.

The resort's three sites helped the budget chain record its highest ever room sales with more than 33,000 snapped up in just six hours.

Millions of pounds were invested in the sites in the town at Bloomfield Road, Talbot Square and next to the Pleasure Beach.

And Blackpool's site made it into Travelodge's top 10 best-performing

hotels following its recent winter sale.

It came 10th in the poll, with London coming top, along with other big cities including Edinburgh and Brighton.

The chain put thousands of its rooms up for grabs at just 9 in a bid to outdo its competitors.

Bosses at Travelodge have warned its rivals of a more "aggressive" sales approach in the weeks leading up to the high season.

Mark Johnston, Blackpool Central Travelodge Hotel manager, said; "The Blackpool Travelodge teams are delighted that Blackpool was one of the top 10 destinations consumers were rapidly snapping up in the first few hours of the Travelodge winter sale.

"It's encouraging to see we are set for a great 2009 winter as well as summer.

"Consumers have been snapping up the 9 and 19 rooms in Blackpool for Christmas shopping breaks throughout November and for a festive getaway in December and January.

"The 9 rooms also provide a low cost opportunity for people to visit a new UK holiday destination that they may not normally be able to afford."

The Travelodge sale beat rival Premier Inn's recent summer sale, which experienced sales of 7,900 in four hours.

Blackpool's franchises also had another reason to celebrate after a cream tea promotion at its three sites will now be rolled out across the UK.

Travelodge managing director UK, Guy Parsons said: "This performance underlines our position as the leading leisure hotel brand. Our sales work well, as they are compelling offers without the caveat of a minimum night stay.

"It is great to see Premier Inn finally ditching its mid market positioning and preparing for battle on price – it will be an aggressive war of attrition which can only benefit the consumer."
