A historic Blackpool hotel has been sold for £180,000 at an auction in London.

Bidding for the Empress Hotel on Exchange Street, which had been given a guide price of £170,000, started at £160,000.

The premises stopped trading in June last year but in its heyday the hotel had boasted the likes of former UK Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, American actress Mae West, Johnny ‘Tarzan’ Weissmuller and political broadcaster and commentator Sir Robin Day among its guests.

The building, which was sold by Savills, has planning permission for conversion into nine flats.

Savills said they were unable to disclose who had bought the hotel.
