The site of an independent school looks set to be sold and turned into a residential area.
As staff and students from AKS Blackpool prepare to move from their South Shore base to the Lytham campus, the site has been handed to agents to arrange its sale.
In a letter sent to families Jim Keefe, headteacher at AKS, said the agents have been appointed to market the Blackpool site – the former Arnold School building – to potential purchasers.
The letter stated discussions with Blackpool Council suggest it would be supportive of a residential development on the land off Lytham Road.
Mr Keefe said: “We have appointed agents who will be responsible for marketing the site to potential purchasers.
“The decision on what becomes of the site will be for whoever purchases it to take it forward with the local authority, when they seek planning permission.
“In our dealings with them, the local authority has been clear it would be interested in supporting a residential development.”
Mr Keefe said funds from the site sale will be invested in the school.
He added: “Since we are a charity we are obliged to maximise our return on the site sale.
“Any money that is recuperated will go to part-fund all the investment that has taken place in Lytham.”
From September all pupils will be based at the school’s Lytham campus, on Clifton Drive, which will feature a new drama studio and upgraded music, science and sixth form facilities.
The school is also having work done to create a new sports hall, set to be completed in 2014.
Work has already been completed on a new library and computing facilities.
