Good times flow for top dairy firm

AN award-winning Fylde dairy company is proving it has the 'white' stuff.

Produce from Fylde Dairies is flying off supermarket shelves and outselling top brands.

The company has been trading with supermarket giant Asda for the past year and is also in talks to try to get its products into other supermarkets.

Howey Hegarty, managing director, who set up the business in 2007, is delighted by the firm's rapid growth.

He said: "Our brand is outselling Asda own brand in the Blackpool and Fleetwood stores.

"That's not been done by any local milk in any other store across the country and it's great news."

Mr Hegarty said that the quality of milk from the Fylde region – due to the lush grass in the area – was vital to the business and hoped they would continue to go from strength to strength.

And now he hopes to expand the business by snapping up more dairy farmers who have fallen on hard times.

"There will be a lot of farmers finding things hard," he added.

"So now is a good time to open up our arms and say that we are here for them.

"If their milk is good enough quality they are welcome at Fylde Dairies."

Fylde Dairies success netted the firm the Natwest Award for the Best Start-up Business in 2007.

After starting off small – bottling milk from dairy farmers John Sanderson from Kirkham and Philip Critchley from Wrea Green – the firm is now producing around 220,000 litres a week.

After breaking into one major supermarket they are now in discussions with others and are about to launch in Sainsbury's.

The milk is also being used by third generation Fylde cheesemakers

Sandhams, who make up to 60 different types of cheese.

Mr Hegarty, who runs the business from a base in Bamber Bridge and has other depots in Weeton and Preston, also hopes other new deals will be concluded soon.

The company is also in the process of opening up new retail outlets in Manchester and Wigan to sell its products, including cheese and cream, direct to customers.
