A Fylde shopping centre has signed up to a national campaign to highlight careers in retail.
Freeport Fleetwood is taking aprt in Retail Matters 2016 – the largest, week-long national celebration of retail careers set to run all this week.
Staged by the British Council of Shopping Centres, Retail Matters 2016 will showcase the great talent and career opportunities in retail and put the spotlight on a sector – which employs some 2,500 people in Fleetwood, helping to maintain the local community and economy.
Freeport offers a number of initiatives to support its retailers and enable the local community to access great jobs within the centre.
It is home to retailers from big brands such as Marks and Spencer and Next to smaller family run businesses such as Heavensent Gifts offering a variety of roles from part time Saturday jobs to store and area managers.
The centre has hosted work experience candidates within the centre management team, most recently from Millfield Science and Performing Arts College and Centre Manager John Magee has recently supported future retail stars with mock job interviews at Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic College, Burnley.
Yvonne Calligan, deputy store manager for Next Outlet, who retires in December after 21 years working at the centre, said: “I’ve loved working in retail at Freeport Fleetwood – in fact I’ve been working here since 1995 when the centre first opened! Working in retail has given me many skills and experiences that I will never forget.”
Rebecca McClellan is the store manager at Beauty Outlet. She said: “I started at Freeport Fleetwood in 2001 as a weekend sales assistant in the Georgio store.
“Since then I have worked in Klass as the assistant manager before my first store manager position which I took up in 2015. I have started a family during the last few years, and my retail job has enabled me to find a suitable work / life balance – I love it!”
John Magee, Centre Manager for Freeport Fleetwood, said: “Retail is a great career choice offering a wide range of rich and rewarding opportunities and initiatives. We seek to encourage as many people from students to those looking for a new career challenge to consider retail, and Freeport Fleetwood, as a job that they can really love and thrive within.”
