Nationally, the Office for National Statistics said the number of people in work rose by 125,000 to 32.07 million.

The claimant count fell by 4,200 in July to 807,800 and the cost of living held steady at 2.6 per cent.

However, the ONS said that taking inflation into account total pay in real terms sank by 0.5 per cent for the period of March to May.

Locally the number of people claiming Universal Credit rose in Blackpool North and Cleveleys constituency by 0.3 per cent to 1,620.

In Blackpool south the figure was 2,160, up 0.2 per cent on the previous year. Fylde’s figure was 690, up 0.1 per cent, Lancaster and Fleetwood was 1,230 up 0.5 per cent and Wyre was 435, up 0.1 per cent.

Efforts to get people into jobs in Blackpool include the Jobcentre Plus organising recruitment days and work place learning academies to improve people’s skills and work experience.

Leanne Croft, partnerships manager at Blackpool Job Centre said: “Slater and Gordon are looking for around 24 contact centre staff and we have been working with them on a recruitment day.

“Baxter Life Care too are recruiting care staff and we are also in the process of working with Tangerine Confectionery with an event on August 18 at the Blackpool North Jobcentre plus.”

She said Blackpool Pleasure Beach was also still recruiting with an eye weekends and Christmas. She said: “We have recruitment days on August 21 and 30 which are being delivered with LearnDirect.”
