MARK McCormack’s jubilation at setting up his own business on September 11, 2001 was cut short by the terrorist attacks on American soil that saw the twin towers of the World Trade Center razed to the ground.

Ten years on though, he’s still delighted he made the decision to set up a furniture shop.

Originally in St Annes, he’s now based on Lytham Road, South Shore, and his shop Selections, has gone through a significant change.

“I started out selling second-hand furniture,” said Mr McCormack, “but when I came to Blackpool I found the guest houses and hotels needed good sturdy furniture and that is what started me looking at selling new furniture.

“The furniture a guest house needs must be able to take some punishment. And South Shore people don’t have that much money so I know I’ve got to be as cheap as possible.”

Trade with guest houses and hotels has formed the staple of the business in recent years, but the shop is still open to trade from individuals as well.

The shop front was improved some years back as the business began to blossom.

Mr McCormack added: “I’m really pleased to have got to the shop’s 10th anniversary - but I won’t go mad, we’ll probably just have a few balloons.

“When I started out I was talking to the wife and it was like ‘what are you doing, you’ve got a steady job’ but I’m glad I did it and went into a completely different career.”
