Three other BAE Systems 'Fellows' have also been inducted into the academy, including its chairman, Dick Olver, Military Air Solutions science and technology director Lambert Dopping Helenstal and astute engineering director, John Hudson.

Mr Howison said: "To be elected to such an important and prestigious body is a personal honour. It is also recognition of the size, scope and complexity of the company's capabilities and I am incredibly proud to be representing BAE Systems in the academy."

Academy president, Lord Browne of Madingley, said: "Our new fellows are among the very best engineers working in the UK today.

"They are pushing the technical boundaries across the most challenging fields from medical imaging to aeronautics and energy technology.

"Together they demonstrate that engineering is at the heart of modern society."
