The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Ed Davey, has said the “potential is huge” for exploring unconventional oil and gas.
He was speaking at a summer reception meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Unconventional Oil and Gas which was attended by 100 people.
He said: “The potential is huge for shale gas development and presents great opportunities for the economy.
“We have learnt from the US experience and recognise that this needs to be a whole Government effort led by DECC [Department of Energy and Climate Change].
“We need to get on with the experimental drilling but the challenge remains for politicians, industry and the group to engage with the public.”
Its vice chairman is Fylde MP Mark Menzies and it is chaired by MP Dan Byles who said: “I am delighted to see so many attendees representing a broad spectrum of experience and views.”
Cuadrilla Resources Ltd has sites for gas exploration on the Fylde in Weeton, Westby and Singleton.
