Couples can take the plunge in Blackpool shark tank

Talk about taking the plunge! Romantic couples can now tie the knot in the shark tank at Blackpool's Sea Life attraction.

The tourist attraction has been granted a licence for “weddings beneath the waves” so a bride and groom can net their catch among the fishes on the Prom.

They can either dive right in with full wet suit and flippers or if they prefer the more traditional whiting wedding, they can don tail-coats and dress to exchange herrings and wed their sole mate in the perfect plaice – under water.

The venue has already had quite a lot of interest for shark tank marriages.

Sea Life general manager Matthew Titherington said: “We’ve taken a number of enquiries already from couples, especially diving enthusiasts, who want to get married among the under water creatures.” He said the couple would have to take their vows with their heads at the surface, so the registrar can hear them clearly as is required by the law.

But after that they can dive down into the tank alongside sharks, stingrays and other marine creatures.

He added: “The registrar will stand in front of the display to conduct proceedings rather than actually climbing into the tank.

Blackpool Register Office were pleasantly surprised by our request and think it makes an exciting venue.

“We can promise couples a truly memorable and unusual wedding day.

“It’ll be a fantastic experience with all the beautiful fish and sea creatures swimming nearby in one of the UK’s most unusual and memorable wedding venues.”

Couples can also choose to be married in other, drier parts of the aquarium, if they wish, such as in the spectacular shark tunnel or in front of the giant ocean window, with colourful sea creatures making a spectacular backdrop.

And Sea Life can also provide champagne and canapes for guests on arrival, as well as a full wedding breakfast to follow the ceremony.
