Staff at a Fleetwood fish and chip shop which is among finalists for a national award were treated to a trip to Norway.

Richardson’s Fish Bar, on Dock Street, made the finals of the 2014 National Fish & Chip Awards after being named the best in north west England.

All the finalists were taken on an educational trip to Alesund to find out more about the industry.

Duty manager James Wood said: “I had a great time in Norway and my understanding of the process behind what we do has come on leaps and bounds.

“The scale of what they’re doing out there is staggering, the volume of fish and even the size of the freezers they’re kept in really is a sight to behold.

“They are extremely efficient at processing the fish too once they are caught.

“It was great to get that sort of insight into where the product comes from, I feel like if a customer asks me a question about sustainability I could talk to them for hours now.”

The finalists all learned about the principles of sustainable fishing and were given of glimpse of various stages of the process, from catching to processing the fish.

Jack-Robert Moller, UK Director of the Norwegian Seafood Council, which hosted the group, said “Everyone at the NSC congratulates the finalists for winning their regional title and we were delighted to invite them on this educational, once in a lifetime trip to Norway to learn more about our sustainable fisheries.”
