A GROUNDBREAKING Blackpool business is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Bosses at family run The Mortgage Shop, based in Topping Street, put their success down to old-fashioned customer service – with personal contact a necessity.
Principal John Norris said: “Times change and we have all the latest cutting edge technology, but face-to-face impartial advice is what wins it.
“When things went quiet in 2008, it was the thousands of loyal customers we’ve dealt with over the years who helped us through the difficult economic times.
“Now, we’re trading 21 per cent up on last year.”
The shop was a revolution when it opened back in 1991.
Previously, estate agents would advise potential homebuyers on mortgages.
Mr Norris added: “We just thought when estate agents were looking after vendors and purchasers there was a conflict of interest potential there.
“We thought there was potential for a shop and a simple concept there. After our first advert was published we were packed out.
“We decided to offer clear, impartial advice, walk people through the process and speak in layman’s terms and that’s what we’ve always done.
The firm also offers life insurance, investment and pensions advice – diversity which has helped the firm survive in a tough time for the housing market.
Mr Norris added: “It’s been hardest for the first-time buyers but some of the banks are sticking their heads above the parapet for them again.”
