£675k bid to boost industrial estates
BUSINESS leaders have unveiled plans to deliver a £675,000 five-year campaign to increase visitor numbers and boost trade in Blackpool.
The proposals form part of an action plan to deliver a Business Improvement District (BID) for the South Shore industrial estates, including Blackpool Business Park, Sycamore Industrial Estate, and Squires Gate Trading Estate.
More than 200 businesses are located across all three sites and it forms the biggest retail and industrial park on the Fylde.
BIDs are an arrangement where businesses identify projects or services that will add value to their firms and agree on how much to pay to make it happen.
Blackpool town centre
already runs a successful BID and the chamber hopes a similar project in South Shore would be successful.
A successful vote for a South Shore BID would
enable business leaders to turn proposals into reality.
Key activities proposed include:
* Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour by installing automatic number plate recognition cameras to monitor vehicle movements. The cameras would be installed at road junctions leading to the three industrial sites.
* Introducing a Business Watch scheme (including e-mail alerts, information sharing, and crime reduction training) to provide a further deterrent to criminal activity.
* Improving recycling rates by providing a regular collection service for paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, and tin.
* Providing a collection and shredding service for confidential waste.
* Developing a co-ordinated marketing campaign to promote the BID area as a location for business including new locational maps and sign boards
Hugh Evans, Policy Director for North and Western Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, said: "Businesses have been telling us they want a South Shore BID to deliver a range of activity to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, reduce the cost of waste collections by introducing more opportunities to recycle, and improve the overall marketing of the three sites in the BID area.
"If businesses vote in favour of the scheme, the 675,000 extra funding that will be generated will be real and sustainable and will be used to create an improved, safer and welcoming environment for businesses, their employees, customers, and visitors.
"What's more, a successful BID will send out a very clear message to businesses and investors that things are moving forward on this part of the Fylde."
Blackpool town centre's BID came into force in 2006 and has raised funds for street rangers, alleygates along with other security and environmental initiatives.
