Blackpool’s boxing star Brian ‘The Lion’ Rose has told of his ongoing frustration after his family were forced out of their home.
Brian and his family have spent the last six nights in hotels after being told an old mill behind his rented house in Dukinfield, near Manchester, could collapse at any second, and they have not yet been allowed to return.
Brian, who is due to fight for the WBO World Light Middleweight Title in May, told The Gazette: “It’s not great.
“The old mill at the back of the house is apparently going to fall down so we had to get evacuated from the house immediately on Saturday.
“I’ve been staying in one hotel but wasn’t happy with that so we booked ourselves into a better hotel.
“I can sleep anywhere and so can my missus but it’s not ideal because our son Oscar’s only two.”
Around 19 terraced homes - including the house which Brian and his family rent - were evacuated last Thursday over fears the converted Victorian mill could suffer a partial collapse.
Businesses inside New Mill, on Park Road, Dukinfield, including an old boxing gym were also ordered to leave immediately after structural engineers visited the building.
The 19th century mill suffered damage during the February storms which caused a ledge in the wall on the fourth floor to be pushed outwards.
Residents including the Rose family were evacuated at around midday on February 20 and those with nowhere to go were put up in Dukinfield Town Hall as inspections continued at the site.
It’s understood that surveyors were concerned about a gable end of the building.
Contractors moved onto the New Mill site on Wednesday morning - almost a week after the area was cleared - to dismantle parts of the structure.
The top two floors of the mill - which contains several companies - were supposed to be demolished on Monday, but a site visit revealed an asbestos risk which delayed the process.
Workers are now removing some of the building’s windows and part of the gable end in a bid to secure the property and allow the residents and businesses to return.
Brian is due to fight American Demetrius Andrade for the world title in two months.
