A hotel giant has listed Blackpool as the top resort for staycations this Easter.
A poll conducted by Travelodge named the town as the UK’s favourite short stay destination – beating competition from London, Cardiff and Brighton.
The study surveyed 2,500 British parents, and found the average family visiting Blackpool will fork out £462.18 – the lowest in the country – during the Easter weekend.
But this all comes as no surprise to the town’s tourism bosses, who say Blackpool is reaping the rewards of quality attractions and consistent redevelopment.
Iain Hawkins, head of Blackpool Cluster at Merlin Entertainments Group, said the resort has benefited from the quality of its attractions, and better weather than this time last year.
He said: “This is good to hear, but it doesn’t surprise me at all.
“The volume of visitors into Blackpool since the beginning of the year has been excellent, and we have been helped by the weather being on side.
“If you consider what Blackpool offers these days it’s so much better.
“We are continually adding new hotels and attractions to the resort, and for that reason, Blackpool is an improving resort.
“Blackpool is the only place outside of London that has the most globally recognisable tourist attractions.”
Jake Taylor, manager of the Doric Hotel, of Queen’s Promenade, North Shore, also believes a recent spell of good weather has helped.
He said: “This is a good thing for Blackpool.
“It tends to get slated, but we want good reviews like this because we are trying to push Blackpool.
“I have definitely seen a difference in the hotel over the last few weeks.
“The weather being nice has helped a lot, too.
“There’s quite a lot of families coming to Blackpool because we have a lot to offer in Blackpool, and there’s been a big increase in tourism.”
Shakila Ahmed, a Travelodge spokeswoman, said: “Keeping the children entertained over the Easter school holidays is no easy task and this year, parents are certainly investing in an Easter staycation short break, as we have seen a double digit increase in sales.
“Our data shows a new trend, with savvy parents foregoing a traditional two night stay in one location for a single night stay in two different areas.
“For example, we have seen families book a one- night stay in Blackpool, and then a one-night stay in either Liverpool for a city break, or in the Lake District to see the countryside.”
