Blackpool North and Cleveleys MP repeats call for better tram safety

Blackpool North and Cleveleys MP Paul Maynard has hit out at County Hall bosses claiming they are sweeping concerns over tram safety under the carpet.

Figures obtained by the MP showed that the majority of accidents involving trams and vehicles occur on the stretch of track within the Lancashire Boundary, despite it being a much shorter length than that in Blackpool.

In a reply to a letter sent to the Chief Executive of Lancashire Jo Turton, the MP was told ‘tramway intersections.. meet the statutory minimum requirement’ and failed to lay out what actions the county may take to improve on their record of having most accidents occurring in Lancashire.

Mr Maynard said: “I would have hoped that after bringing this to the Council’s attention that they would have taken note and come up with a plan to improve safety for drivers crossing the tram tracks in Cleveleys and Fleetwood safer – this to me is just common sense.

“I call now upon the County Council to investigate why these accidents are occurring.”
