UNSEASONAL weather – gale force winds and driving rain rather than twinkling snowflakes – has forced organisers of Blackpool’s Christmas lights switch-on to postpone the event.

The event complete with a special light show, entertainments, music, food and drink was due to take place tonight at St John’s Square from 6pm.

However, the storm which is lashing the resort had forced a rethink although the family fun-fair and late night opening for festive shoppers will continue.

The festive lights were due to be turned on by the mayors of Fylde, Blackpool and Wyre to launch a season of activities along with the fun fair to run until January 4.

It has been organised by by Blackpool Business Improvement District (BID), with help from the North Pier and is designed to keep visitors coming in to the town throughout the festive period.
