A NEW recycling scheme which will see Fylde homes supplied with two more wheelie bins is set to save the authority £100,000.
Fylde Council says homes with suitable space will be given a blue bin for the collection of glass bottles and jars, cans, and plastic bottles in place of the current green bin.
A brown bin will be issued to replace the white sack used by householders to recycle cardboard.
The two new bins will have a capacity of 180 litres and be slightly smaller than the grey and green bins which will remain in use.
The bins will be rolled out in three phases, from April 30 to September 28.
The changes to the collection service, including the reduction in vehicles needed, will save more than £100,000 in the first three years, which will be utilised to fund the new containers.
A spokesman for the council said: “The bags in particular have been very unpopular as many blew away, or were lost, and proved a source of discontent.
“The change means we need fewer vehicles making collections, so it will cost less, which is good for the taxpayer, and we think it’s a step in the direction.
“Landfill tax is also going up in a few years so it’s important we recycle more because that money again comes out of council tax raised.”
It’s hoped the new wheeled bins will be more manoeuvrable than the boxes and bags currently in use, and should cut down on spillages during collection days.
Recycling will also be easier for residents, as items will no longer have to be squashed or flattened to fit into the boxes and sacks. The anticipated increase in recycling will help Fylde meet the new national recycling target of 50 per cent by 2020 and reduce the demand for landfill.
