The event was supposed to be held last month but bad weather stopped play, forcing it to be postponed until this week.

It will now be held in St John’s Square from 1pm.

And Natalie Wyatt, managing director of Marketing Blackpool, told The Gazette: “The Mascot Games is a hugely popular event and with everyone currently enjoying Team GB’s fantastic medal success in the Olympics we hope to see many sporting fans this Friday.

“It is great to host such fun, free family events where spectators can enjoy a great day in a fantastic public space.”

Last year’s Grand Champions, Bling and Balula from Sandcastle Waterpark, will attempt to defend their title against strong competition from the Sea Life Centre’s Sharky Shark, Lenny Lion from Blackpool Zoo, Jungle Jim from Blackpool Tower, Matcham Monkey from the Blackpool Grand Theatre, Wendy Gardens from the Blackpool Winter Gardens, Bradley Beaver from Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Stanley Squirrel from Stanley Park, Chirpy Chipmunk and Mr C (Gull) from South and Central Piers and Barci the Cockerel from Nandos.

The Mascot Games will see characters competing against each other in a number of disciplines including musical deckchairs, ball weave and an egg and spoon race.

The top three will then compete in the final discipline, the Obstacle Course, before being crowned VisitBlackpool Mascot Games Champion.

Weather forecasters predict sunny weather for the event which takes place between 1pm and 3pm.
