Balloon celebration to mark 300th anniversary

Up, up and away!Youngsters at a school marking its 300th birthday released balloons to help herald the start of a year of celebrations.

Staff and pupils at Baines Endowed in Thornton are honouring the efforts of philanthropist James Baines who left money to fund three schools across the Fylde coast in 1717.

Old photographers and cuttings will be put on display, the High Sheriff of Lancashire John Barnett is set to visit, while youngsters will be pulling on period costumes.

On Monday, hundreds of balloons were released, with a prize given to the owner of the one found furthest away.
