IT’S one of the enduring images of the golden age of the holiday camp in the 50s and 60s.

Women lined up at seaside resorts in their swimming costumes all competing for the top title of Miss Blackpool, Miss Pontins, Miss Butlins, Miss Scarborough etc

That’s the sort of fun and glamour Jenny Oliver, from Marton and Lynsay Evans, who lives in Fleetwood, are hoping to capture with their very first beauty pageant - Miss Seaside Beauty – taking place later this year.

The pair would love to see such celebrations of beauty and glamour become popular once again and help draw people back to resorts like Blackpool.

Jenny said the two mums decided to set up the pageant as they felt there were not many already existing in the North West.

She said: “We want to show the public that beauty pageants are not a negative thing and the current misconceptions are not true, and most of all the contestants gain a lot of confidence from taking part in such events.”

Both women have been involved in pageants, with their daughters taking part in them.

The event will take place on August 12, at Tiffanys Hotel, on North Promenade.

It will include six categories, to allow girls – and some boys – of all ages to take part.

Contestants can enter from anywhere in the country.

The women hope the event will help to remind people of the historic roots beauty pageants have in seaside towns – where in the 20th century they grew in popularity.

Jenny said: “Beauty pageants began back in the 1920s, in America.

“The most popular round proved to be the swimwear round and they tended to be held in cities and towns along the coast.

“The 1960s introduced age division entries due to high popular demand, as the contestants increased by thousands.

“We believe setting up Miss Seaside Beauty in Blackpool will introduce explanation of the historic roots beauty pageants have, it will also tie in with the seaside theme – the origins of when pageants began.”

There will be three rounds in the competition – summer/casual, outfit of choice and formal wear.

The categories are as follows:

* Baby Seaside: 0-2 years

* Little Miss Seaside: 5-8 years

* Prince Seaside: 3-8 years for boys

* Pre-teen Seaside: 9-12 years

* Miss Teen Seaside:13-17 years

* Miss Seaside: 18-35 years
