Appeal after man ‘beaten with wood in street attack’

A man was allegedly beaten with pieces of wood by a group of men who chased him down the street.

Detectives have released a description of one man they are hunting after the unprovoked incident in Blackpool on Saturday morning.

A 21-year-old man was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital following the incident, which is said to have happened on Devonshire Road, at around 3.30am.

The victim was close to the Farmfoods store when he was allegedly attacked with items taken from nearby gardens, officers said.

Det Sgt Mark Dickinson, of Blackpool CID, said: “We are investigating an assault on a lone male who was walking along Devonshire Road in the early hours of Saturday.

“He was cornered and attacked by a group of three or four males.

“The offenders have chased the victim and cornered him in the front garden of a nearby property, where they have attacked him with weapons.

“They have used some pieces of wood and possibly some metal poles taken from nearby gardens. He suffered some nasty cuts and bruises to the head and body, which required hospital treatment.”

The man has since been discharged from hospital.

Police are hunting a man aged between 20 and 30 in connection with the attack. He is described as white, of a stocky build and with short blonde hair that is cropped at the back and sides.

l A 19-year-old man from Blackpool has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

A 22-year-old man from Blackpool has been arrested in connection with the incident and was last night in police custody.
