AN INVESTIGATION has been launched after mindless vandals targeted a statue of a sporting legend.
Blackpool FC’s Jimmy Armfield statue - paid for entirely by Blackpool FC supporters - was daubed with paint overnight.
The attack, which club officials hope to have caught on CCTV, saw the statue of the Blackpool and England great painted to look like The Joker from the Batman movies.
Police were called after the damage was spotted by the club’s groundsman early this morning.
The statue, situated outside the club’s ground on the corner of Bloomfield Road and Seasiders Way, was only unveiled in May after Blackpool Supporters’ Association arranged for Armfield to be honoured.
Fans raised £75,000 for the statue after months of fundraising.
