A fisherman had to be airlifted to hospital after being rescued from the sea.

Emergency services were called to the beach at Cleveleys on Friday night following reports of a man in the water.

A lifeboat and air ambulance were scrambled to the scene at around 5.30pm.

Blackpool RNLI said the casualty had made it safely to shore by the time its boat had arrived.

Fleetwood coastguard, which was also involved in the rescue, said the man was airlifted to hospital for assessment following the incident.

In a separate call-out just hours later, police and Lytham Coastguard were involved in searching for a “despondent male” reported along Blackpool Promenade.

Following the call, at 1.30am on Saturday, the man was found safe and well by police officers.
