MILITARY wives and their children spent a day in the resort to help take their minds off the troubles of war.

The 1st Battalion Scots Guard are currently serving in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, while their wives wait anxiously at home.

Families were given the chance to let their hair down and travelled from their base in Catterick Garrison, North Yorkshire, to take in the thrills of the Pleasure Beach.

Capt Gary Dunning, said: “The families don’t keep in touch as much as we would like so this is an ideal opportunity for them to spend time with each other.

“It’s absolutely vital we bring the families together because we pride ourselves on being a family orientated regiment.”

Jo Dowd, 39, was spending the day out with her two daughters.

She said: “It’s years since I’ve been to Blackpool but it’s fantastic.

“The boys are away for a long time and trips like this are really helpful for everyone.”
