A Poulton student is among only a handful of young people from the UK to win an internship with a major US fashion giant.
Lauren Mather, who went to Blackpool and The Fylde College, will jet off to the States this summer to spend 12 weeks with GAP-owned clothing and accessories company Old Navy.
Lauren, who attends Bath Spa University, is one of only 12 students from the UK to win the three-month internship in San Francisco.
The university was invited to take part in Old Navy’s annual design project, after course leader and coordinator of fashion Louise Pickles had been developing links with the firm.
Two other high profile UK universities also took part.
The brief for the project was We are Family and students were asked to focus on a spring 2014 collection.
Building on the heritage of the Old Navy brand, they were tasked to design a collection inspired by denim, T-shirts and sweatshirts which fit into the DNA of the Old Navy brand.
Design and human resources directors from Old Navy recently visited Bath Spa’s fashion studio and viewed the work where they selected seven students to interview, with their full portfolio.
And former St Mary’s Catholic College School pupil Lauren was chosen.
The 20-year-old said: “I originally wanted to be a fashion journalist, but I’ve always loved art.
“So I have tried to combine the two. It’s still not really sunk in.
“It will be a great experience and a really good start to my career.
“I am really looking forward to it.”
