One of the largest nurseries in Blackpool has gotten even bigger following an extensive £55,000 overhaul.

Gruntys Day Care Nursery, in Staining Road, now has space for 128 youngsters after extending into the former Fun Factory.

Part of the indoor play area, which closed to the public in November 2008 but is still used by children at the nursery, has been converted into preschool rooms due to an increase in demand for places.

Manager Sally Manning and her staff were set to show off the refurbished premises to the public at an open day on Saturday.

She said: “We had quite a large waiting list and we were having to turn people away because we were full. They were getting upset we couldn’t provide a place so we decided to extend. We could take 88 children of all ages before and we now have places for 128.”

Four new jobs have been created, with more new members of staff set to be recruited as more parents sign their children up.

By reducing the size of the former Fun Factory, the nursery – run by local leisure firm Partington’s Holiday Parks –40 new preschool places for youngsters aged from three to five have been created.

Sally said: “We had four rooms upstairs and we removed two to create the preschool room.

“We still have two [Fun Factory] rooms, which the children love. They would be in there all the time if they could.

“It’s a unique selling point for us.”

Work got underway in October and finished just before the Christmas break. The entire nursery was refurbished, with staff working ‘extremely hard’ to get it done, Sally said.

Several activities were due to be held from 10am until 2pm on Saturday, with youngsters able to enjoy the play area as their parents look around the upgraded facilities.

Discounts were being offered to those who sign up on the day.
