A CONVOY of hundreds of bikers took over the M55 as local riders did their bit to support a national campaign.

Riders paraded along the motorway yesterday as part of a UK-wide demonstration about planned EU motorcycling laws.

Around 200 people took part in the Motorcycle Action Group (MAG) demo, which saw bikes join the motorway at Blackpool and ride for around 20 minutes before dispersing.

They were protesting against proposed EU regulations about roadside testing and the right of owners to modify their machines, as well as French laws which would see all bikers in the country forced to wear reflective clothing.

Phil McGladdery, MAG’s Blackpool area rep, said: “There was a big cross section of bikes.

“It caused more congestion than we intended but the way people supported it shows how much people are in favour of what we’re trying to do.

“It wasn’t aimed at causing disruption but to show how many people are in support of what we’re campaigning for.”

About 80 similar rides took place in the UK.
