A WESHAM councillor has praised county road chiefs for their decision to change the design of a new roundabout.
Residents in Wesham had expressed concerns that the new roundabout on Station Road could cause a serious accident.

However, following the complaints from both residents and local councillors, County Hall bosses have decided to re-think the design.

Coun Simon Renwick welcomed Lancashire County Council’s decision.

He said: “I am delighted the county has agreed that this roundabout is dangerous.

“The steps they are taking should have been taken when the roundabout was installed, and not risk the life and limb of Wesham residents while they carried out a safety audit.”

He added: “I think this is a clear victory for common sense, people power and good campaigning.

“I can only hope this was an experimental oversight and not cost cutting by the county.”

Following the campaign for a change in the design, the county council have agreed to erect more signage and introduce anti-skid surfacing.

They also hope to raise the roundabout in the middle. It is believed that double yellow lines could be introduced.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council, said: “The roundabout is part of the new housing development in the area and was needed as part of the planning application.

“As with any design, we do monitor its progress and to see if any changes are needed.

“In this case, it is clear certain changes do need to be made.”

The spokesman added: “We will be looking to add a round top to the roundabout which we hope will prevent people from driving straight over it.

“We will also be installing additional road signs warning people that there is a roundabout.”
