This Peach is a real treat
THERE'S a Peach of a treat in store for Fylde coast families at Lytham Hall on Bank Holiday Sunday.
The Peach in question is one of the main attractions in a stage adaptation of Roald Dahl's best-selling novel James and the Giant Peach, presented at Lytham Hall by acclaimed open-air specialists Illyria.
With a six-strong cast, Illyria will be in Lytham on Sunday at 5.30pm on the final lap of their country-wide tour, which sees them giving 70 performances in 99 days at 57 different venues.
Maxwell Hook, who plays James in Oliver Gray's production, has been delighted to be part of a demanding but very successful tour.
"We realised that we had a hit on our hands very early in the tour when we played a week at the famous cliff-top Minack theatre in Cornwall," he said. "We have even had to ask all the venues to provide bouncers to keep children from invading the stage!"
Alison Plackitt, of Plackitt and Booth's bookshop in Clifton Street, in Lytham, has seen record numbers of customers buying tickets there for all three Illyria plays at Lytham Hall. "I am expecting to see a very sizeable family audience for James," she said. "The children in particular are wondering just how big the Giant Peach will be. It's certainly a treat for families as the summer holidays come to an end."
Martin Gunson, whose chartered accountancy has been one of four business sponsors for the Illyria season, feels that James will bring a successful season to an exciting conclusion.
"Pride and Prejudice and Romeo and Juliet were both brilliantly performed in July and I am confident that this will be the usual Illyria mix of comedy and inventiveness," he said. "I am looking forward especially to seeing the horrid Aunt Sponge!"
Tickets for the performance, which starts at 5.30pm and ends at 7.15pm, can be bought at the gate and at www.illyria.uk.com
