Stee back on home ground
A band fronted by Blackpool-born vocalist Stee Jackson makes its debut in the resort tomorrow when Dear Acetate (right) open the show for The Proclaimers in the Winter Gardens Arena.
"It's our first Blackpool gig, although being my home town it's somewhere that we've been keen on playing for a while," says Stee. "I haven't played in Blackpool since the West Coast Rock Cafe and The Tache in the summer before I went to university."
Born in Blackpool, Stee went to Bretton Hall, part of Leeds University, where he graduated with First Class honours in Popular Music Studies.
He then moved to London to take up a job in IT, hoping it would finance a project studio for his songwriting.
"I found myself writing a lot more band orientated music again and put the solo stuff on hold and decided to form or join a band," he said.
He met up with Marc Dove and Shane Shanahan who had studied music together at college in St Albans and then at University in Sheffield.
"Having returned to Hertfordshire, they had begun jamming together with a guy on bass they'd been at college with," says Stee.
"They were searching for a suitable vocalist and Marc contacted me, having found me on a musicians website. Everything just seemed to click straightaway, and I knew from the first song they played me that it was the right band for me."
Dear Acetate formed in 2006 producing angular melodic tunes.
Just six months after their debut gig, they played the 1,000-capacity Aylesbury Civic, as main support to seminal indie band The Wonder Stuff. This was swiftly followed by a personal request from Embrace frontman Danny McNamara to play (as the NME described it) "super-hip new band night Another Music = Another Kitchen."
The Embrace end-of-year party at Proud Galleries saw Dear Acetate featuring as special guests, sharing the bill with Scouting For Girls.
Recent gigs include venues on the London circuit such as the Dublin Castle, Monto Water Rats and The Marquee.
The band are currently in the studio recording their self-produced debut album, scheduled for an autumn release.
