Soulful hoodies Grand treat
Black Vegas Blackpool Grand Theatre
IF YOU are a fan of Blackpool's local music scene, you will be used to the small, dark corners of town centre pubs, with bands battling against the background noise of a night out.
But Blackpool's music scene was last night let loose in the sumptuous surroundings of the Grand Theatre, treating its unique crowd of talented musicians to the delightful acoustics of the 1,200-seater auditorium, in Black Vegas.
To the average Grand-going crowd, the theatre would have been unrecognisable, with hoodies and drainpipe jeans replacing colourful costumes, and electric guitars – and even an Apple Mac – replacing the full orchestra.
But the soulful sound of local singer Karima Francis, the showmanship of Sinister Footwear, and the acoustic delight that is Dan Wilde did not fail to fill the room.
And despite a small audience, the aisles won't have seen as much dancing action in years as Rock Quest bands hit the stage, and Madness-inspired Ska Face brought on the saxophones.
The only disappointment for the bands and singers would be the lack of new faces – their hardcore fans had followed them but failed to convince people who weren't lovers of indie-rock to come along.
But if you're not part of the local music scene, maybe you should venture out tonight for the second and final performance, which will see Rock Quest finalists The Silvertones perform along with singer-songwriter Jon Gomm.
The evening will even see a little magic, with an illusionist and a man posing as the devil.
The show starts at 8pm.
