Silvers go for gold

Blackpool's Silvertones continue their recent rise to fame by providing the backing track to the well publicised Soldiers Charity single, recorded at their Rock Hard Studios.

The Queen single, No One But You (Only the Good Die Young), was chosen as the project song to the delight of Brian May, who has continued to give his full endorsement and backing to the project.

The single – featuring Darren Day (see the Main Event on page 3 of The Weekend), Mikey North (Coronation Street's Gary Windass) and X Factor's Rachel Hylton – was released this week via iTunes with all proceeds going to The Army Benevolent Fund's Soldiers Charity.

The band say they were honoured to lay the track down for such a worthy cause, which was shown by spending three days and nights in North Shore based Rock Hard Studios putting the track down, making sure that all fine tuning of the song was done to its full potential.

Dan Atkinson, Silvertones' drummer said, "It was a stressful few days and nights, but the time was needed to make sure that the track was spot on.

"The big difficulty was replicating the sound and the frustration we got from our determination to make it sound right so we owe a big thank you to Steven Ladley and Daniel Hilton for their help in making a version of the song that would go on to receive backing and praise from Brian May himself after he had received an email from Darren Day asking for his opinion."

The band said, "To be asked to provide the track was enough but to receive praise from Brian May was a massive bonus".

Gazette Rock Battle regulars, Silvertones are currently recording their debut album, Meet Yourself (Along the Way), which promises to be the next big step on a ladder they reckon they are climbing quickly.

The next chance to catch them live is The Ship & Royal in Lytham on Friday, July 23.
