Showcase for writers takes off

If you are a writer who would like your work showcased out loud by experienced play readers then the recently formed Stage Write could be the solution.

Formed last October by Ian Lamond, who co-organises the annual Grand Words play writing competition at the Grand Theatre, Stage Write meets on the first Thursday of the month (except February) at FYCreative on Church Street from 6.30 to 8.30pm.

"The group is an opportunity for people interested in writing for performance – whether that's stage, radio, television or film – to have their work read by a group of experienced play readers," says Ian.

"The sessions provide amateur and semi-professional writers a chance to try out their ideas, discuss them and support them in developing those ideas further.

"In future sessions we intend to have public rehearsed readings, professionally led master classes and drop-in writing advice surgeries."

"Although there are numerous writers groups across the Fylde and Preston area these focus of poetry and prose writing.

"There is currently nothing to develop skills, or support and encourage, those people who are interested in writing for performance."

The group is run by a number of independent arts professionals and operates as a loose not-for-profit consortium.

Stage Write's monthly play-reading accepts full one act plays, extracts from one-act or longer work, or script ideas with a few pages of trial dialogue, adds Ian.

There is a call for scripts every month which must be emailed to Ian Lamond at od_ghoti@hotmail.com no later than 2pm on the last Thursday of the month.

If your script is selected for reading you will be notified within five days of submission. Script reading takes place in the gallery at FYCreative on Church Street, Blackpool on the first Thursday of the month – attendance costs 3 and meetings run from 6.30 to 8.30pm.

As well as this Stage Write also organises rehearsed readings of selected submitted scripts three times a year; runs master classes with invited professional writers; organises advice surgeries for aspiring writers for performance and manage (in association with Blackpool Grand Theatre) the annual one-act play writing competition – Grand Words.
