Shakespeare al fesco

William Shakespeare returns for a third season to Rossall School when Lancashire-based Dean Taylor Professional Productions stages public performances of The Merchant of Venice in the school grounds.

The setting could not be more apposite for staging outdoor Shakespeare," says producer/director Dean Taylor whose company entertained large numbers last summer with its much acclaimed The Taming of the Screw.

The Merchant of Venice is a romantic-drama set in Italy (c1600) and is a play famous for Shylock, the money-lender's pound of flesh and the beautiful Portia's " quality of mercy" speech.

Says Dean: "Our professional ensemble will be 10 strong. We have commissioned a new score, a fusion of jazz and classical music to accompany the action to be played live by musicians from the Royal Northern College of Music. Costumes are from the Royal Shakespeare Company."

Audiences are encouraged to bring a picnic and a favourite tipple, sit back and enjoy.

"It has become part of the social calendar," said a spokesperson for Rossall. Performance dates: Wednesday (June 24) and Thursday (June 25) at 2 and 7pm. Further information and box office: (01772) 466256. More details: www.shakespearetheatreoutdoors.co.uk
