Platform for talent
Rock FM radio station has joined forces with Blackpool music venue the West Coast Rock Café, to bring a host of live music events to the town across the summer.
To help local music talent, Rock FM is launching Blackpool Rocks: Unsigned - an on-line portal where bands are
able to upload their music for others to hear, in the hope of being discovered.
From here, music industry moguls will be inviting the most favoured bands to play live on the unsigned stage at the West Coast's Club Above every Sunday throughout the summer.
Six heats will form the basis of a bigger competition in which finalists from each event will get to play against each other in a live final on Sunday, August 30.
The winner will bag themselves studio recording time at the Blue Room to
create a three track EP/CD and will get their track aired on Rock FM and
interviewed by DJ and Weekend
columnist Vicky Warham.
Nikki Murray, event manager of Blackpool Rocks: Unsigned, said: "This is an amazing opportunity for true talent to get noticed.
"West Coast is renowned for providing a platform for new music with Little Boots, Elliot Minor and Reverend and the Makers being just some of their successes and we hope to add to their list.
"There is a huge demand to get noticed and we want to be the ones to give them that extra opportunity."
The series of events has also received backing from Blackpool Primary Care Trust's altn8 campaign, who have been announced as title sponsors for the unsigned band promotion.
Steve Morton, Alcohol Harm Reduction Policy Officer at NHS Blackpool said: "We were delighted to get the opportunity to sponsor this event as it gives an opportunity for local artists to get themselves noticed. It also demonstrates that people can go to pubs and clubs without getting drunk.
"Live music, other entertainment and food are all healthy things which pubs could use to increase their profits during these difficult times.
"During the competition evening, free iced water will be available to all customers reinforcing the altn8 message."
Local bands wanting to get a piece of the action can do so by visiting www.rockfm.co.uk/unsigned and uploading their demo - all types of music
welcome.
Nikki added: "There is such a diverse music world out there and this is an opportunity for all to showcase their talents. From soft rock, to singer/songwriters, we can truly appreciate all music
genres and want to use these events to show our support for genuine stars."
The first heat is on Sunday, July 19, and will culminate in the grand final on Bank Holiday Sunday in August.
Admission to each event is free of charge. Doors will open at 8pm with the first act on from 8.30pm every Sunday.
Whilst there are no age restrictions on bands submitting their demos, the live heats will only be offered to those over 18 years old.
The station, Blackpool PCT and West Coast do plan to host an additional under 18s event, should there be the demand.
