Join group reading Russell hit

Blackpool Grand Theatre's popular play reading group The Play's The Thing will enjoy the first part of Willy Russell's poignant play Shirley Valentine at Blackpool Central Library on Saturday at 1.30pm.

The Play's The Thing takes place on the first Saturday of each month at the Grand and is intended for adults who may have an interest in reading plays, either appearing at the Grand, or plays that have a theme in keeping with the theatre's programme of performances.

On Saturday the playreading group will begin Shirley Valentine. With this famous play Russell developed a new style of writing – the one woman show.

It takes the form of a monologue by a housewife before and after a transforming holiday in Greece.

Commissioned by the Everyman Theatre, the play premiered in Liverpool in 1986 and opened in the West End in 1988. It went onto Broadway during 1990, marking Willy Russell's Broadway debut. This production starred Pauline Collins who went on to play Shirley in the award-winning 1989 film version with Tom Conti.

The Play's The Thing will continue with the second part of Shirley Valentine on Saturday August 3. The play reading group is led by Jennifer Smethurst who also runs the Act One Drama Studio that has taken many young people and adults through their LAMDA awards for many years. Jennifer is a qualified drama instructor with many years experience in working in the performing arts.

The Play's The Thing play reading group reads Shirley Valentine at Blackpool Central Library on Saturday and at the Lawrence House Studio at Blackpool's Grand Theatre on Saturday August 3 at 1.30pm. Tickets 3.
