Fighting, fun and fish ... in bed!
Bedroom Farce Grand Theatre, Blackpool
FEED him, give him clean clothes and don't tell him anything more than you have to.
Sound advice on how to keep your man happy from the chaotically sleepless world of Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce.
Those who have ever wondered what it would be like to be a fly on the wall of other couples' bedrooms were simply spoilt for choice with three different boudoirs and four very different couples.
As well as some talk of the most obvious bedroom activity, we see bed chambers used for a variety of things from convalescing and DIY to places a place to store coats, eat sardines on toast and even physically fight with table lamps.
The lives of Ayckbourn's characters are intertwined as though tangled in bed sheets and centred around the collapsing relationship of the dreamy Trevor and hysterical Susanna.
His characters as always are vividly drawn and brought into focus even more sharply by their contrast with each other.
Juliet Mills was effortlessly elegant in silk pyjamas and commanded much of the laughter thanks to a perfect comedy partnership with Bruce Montague's Ernest. Nesting new love birds Kate and Malcolm were perfectly nauseating with their endless flirtation but then amusingly divided by DIY as they settled into their new home.
Maxwell Caulfield's high maintenance invalid Nick also won lots of laughs as he was confronted in bed by his potentially unfaithful wife Jan and her hapless ex lover Trevor.
Although action is somewhat limited, dialogue is typically rich, witty and kept the audience drawn in.
As the first half set the scene, the second saw it all collapse into chaos where couples swapped bedrooms and the laughter kept coming. A strong cast make it a pyjama party not to be missed.
