REVIEW: Vagina Monologues, Grand Theatre, Blackpool. If you thought “Harold’s alive” were the most controversial words to ever fall from Madge from Neighbours lips – a shock lay in store at Blackpool Grand in Saturday night.

Eve Ensler’s Vagina Monologues returned to Blackpool with three new faces Madge – aka Anne Charlston, Mel Giedroyc and local star Hayley Tamaddon.

A night of tales devoted to women’s most sacred parts didn’t pack the house, which was a shame for what was possibly one of the best casts yet.

Some of the sauciest monologues were reserved for frightfully posh Aussie matriarch Anne. They evoked the kind of behind the hand giggling you may get if your Gran began cursing at Christmas after too much cherry brandy.

Hey famously husky voice leant itself well to a range of accents and she brought emotion as well as humour to a touching story about an old woman’s celibacy.

Vagina Monologues can at times feel a bit too American but Mel Giedroyc was the perfect antidote.

By substituting some monologues usually done in a yankee accent for a posh English one and American place names like Texas for Tesco – she produced asthmatic squeals of mirth.

Hayley Tamaddon also enjoyed a triumphant homecoming. As well as being Northern girl next door and revelling in the saucy bits, she gave a particularly moving account of a young victim from a Serbian rape camp proving she is more than a one trick pony.

Banter with friends and family added to the audience interaction. The chemistry between the trio worked very well in what was a very enjoyable performance.
